Publicizing Events on the Sunshine Coast
updated May 12, 2008
For further assistance in publicizing your event, research, or writing press releases contact Margot Collins at m@gentlebuzz.com
There are several media outlets on the Sunshine Coast that can help you publicize your events through free event listings, news stories based on your press releases, and/or paid advertising.
When submitting press releases, realize that not all stories will be accepted for publication. Labeling your submissions as press releases and using clear, concise language will increase the chances of having your information included. |
The Coast Reporter
http://www.coastreporter.net
A newspaper with a circulation of 13,000 distributed free to Coast residents and on sale for $1
The "Community Calendar" provides free listings with very brief information for one time and ongoing community events. They ask for two weeks' notice. Send via email to:
calendar@coastreporter.net
There are also community columns for individual towns along the Coast. Each columnist must submit their column to the editor by Tuesdays at 5 p.m. but each may choose to send theirs in early, so submit your event the week before. Generally, only community and nonprofit events are included. The email addresses for each column are:

Gibsons: jemtheo@telus.net
Halfmoon Bay: slamb@sd46.bc.ca
Pender Harbour: doepel@dccnet.com

Listings should be no more than 7 lines with 28 characters per line (including spaces and punctuation.) The deadline is one week before you would like the announcement to display. Listings submitted via the website are more likely to be included.

Posters
The old-fashioned method of putting up posters on local bulletin boards is still a great way to get the message out about your event. Consider attaching small tear-off strips with date, time, and location information so that people will be more likely to remember and attend (and less likely to tear down your poster!)
Some locations include the community bulletin board across from the post office in Gibsons, the bus shelter across from Just a Cuppa in lower Gibsons, Kerns Plaza, Sunnycrest Mall, the Trail Bay Centre, the Gumboot Cafe, the Roberts Creek General Store, grocery stores, and public libraries. |
